I own and operate a crane and have seen a lot of wire rope slings.

I have used many different types of wire rope slings and am a crane operator who works on usually pretty tall buildings up to about 25 stories or more. Here are some tricks of the trade that I picked up after a while about wire rope slings.

First of all let's say that we are lifting a flat of concrete that weights about 1000 pounds. If we used two separate wire rope slings we would have 500 pounds on each. Now here's the tricky part. What if we have one wire rope sling for the same item in a vertical basket hitch. Now we'll have to consider the angle of the wire rope sling from the top edge on each side to the actual hitch. If the wire rope sling is a 60 degree angle then each side of the wire rope sling will be lifting 577 pounds each exactly. If the wire rope sling was at a 45 degree angle each side would have to be able to carry 707 pounds of weight. This info is just an estimate every situation out there is different. We buy and trust Bilco for all of our wire rope sling.
