Anchor Shackles for Towing and Hoisting

Anchor shackles are a commonly used cable towing and hoisting connector hardware item that provides a secure joining of a variety of objects and the towing or hoisting cable. Oftentimes used in conjunction with heavy gauge wire rope cables, anchor shackles are a critical component of a cabling, towing, and hoisting assembly. Anchor shackles must be manufactured to the very highest standards of structural and strength integrity because of the very large weight loads that are often associated with cabling assemblies.

A tow truck traveling at high speed with a car or large truck attached to its tow cable is a good example of the loads that may be placed on anchor shackles, and it's easy to visualize the type of disaster that could occur if the towed vehicle should become separated from the towing cable and then careen across the highway. An enormously large and heavy steel I-beam being hoisted high above the heads of a crowd of construction workers must have a fail-safe connection to the wire rope or other cable that supports it; obviously, such an object falling to the ground could result in serious injuries or deaths.

Anchor shackles are a U-shaped object with a removable, many times cotter pinned, thru-bolt rod assembly at the top of the U-shape that is used to close a connection between objects and a wire rope or other type of cable used in the towing or hoisting assembly. These thru-bolts are often referred to as round pins, screw pins, or safety pins, but all serve the same function of providing a secure towing or hoisting cable connection.

Anchor Shackles for Light and Heavy-Duty Use

Anchor shackles come in a variety of gauges and sizes. Very large anchor shackles might be used in a construction crane application (for example) while smaller-sized, light-duty anchor shackles might be used by an individual who wishes to hang a tire swing from a tree. Anchor shackles may be seen in a wide variety of commercial, industrial, and individual uses wherever a safe and secure wire rope or other cabling connection is required. Additionally, anchor shackles can be manufactured from a variety of materials, depending on the size and use of the item.

Many seagoing vessels will utilize anchor shackles for sail hoisting or other lifting applications, and because of the exposure to the salt air and sea, stainless steel anchor shackles—in conjunction with stainless steel wire rope—will be the material of choice. Tempered steel, forged iron, stainless steel, brass, bronze, galvanized steel, and a wide variety of other alloys may be used in the manufacture of anchor shackles. Anchor shackles are weight and stress rated by the manufacturer in order to properly size the hardware item to the job at hand. Whatever the task, quality built anchor shackles are available in the right material and size to ensure a safe and secure towing or hoisting cable assembly.
