The choice a person makes about wire rope will have direct effects on the application it is being used for. Considering all the available options, how is it possible to know which is the right one to purchase and use. Each rope type has special, unique characteristics that endow them with certain performance abilities. Before making a choice, it is recommended to spend time looking closely at each rope’s individual characteristic.
Understanding the basic characteristics of wire ropes will help individuals make smart choices when purchasing wire ropes.
- Strength: rope strength is typically measured in tons of 2,00lbs. Wire rope strength is considered the minimum breaking force (or nominal strength) based off published material. Ropes should never be operated at/near the minimum breaking force.
- Fatigue resistance: finding resistance levels requires metal fatigue of the wire. High fatigue resistance is only possible when wires are fully capable of bending while under stress. A common example is a rope passing over a sheave.
- Crushing resistance: crushing is defined as the effect of outside pressure on ropes that are responsible for damages and distortions. Crushing resistance refers to a ropes capacity to withstand external forces. After crushing, damaged ropes will not move or adjust normally while in operation.
- Deformation resistance: metal can wear away from outer ropes, which changes the shape of ropes. This is considered deformation. Deformation is less likely to happen to ropes that have high abrasion resistance, which means ropes withstand exterior metal being worn away.
